Opening Reception: Fabricated Boundaries: Filipina American Textile & Fiber Artists [Gallery Opening] September 6, 6-9 PM | American University Museum | FREE
Four Filipina American artists weave together stories of identity, migration, and memory in this deeply personal exploration of straddling two cultures. Using traditional materials such as abaca (banana fiber) and piña (pineapple fiber), they push boundaries by blending diverse mediums and techniques, including embroidery, weaving, crocheting, and papercutting. At the heart of the exhibition is habi, the Tagalog word for “weaving,” which captures how these interconnected stories form a collective narrative about heritage transcending borders while navigating life far from ancestral homelands. Opening Reception: Full Saturation [Gallery Opening] September 10, 6-8 PM | The Line DC | FREE
In difficult times, art can be a source of joy and inspiration, as demonstrated by this colorful group exhibition. DMV artists Aphra Adkins, Genie Ghim, Kate Sable, and Rose Jaffe present bold, saturated works designed to lift spirits and celebrate the simple pleasure of vibrant color. Running through October 31, the show reminds us that not every exhibition needs to tackle difficult themes to make an impact. Sometimes the most radical thing art can do is affirm that beauty and boldness still matter in dark times. Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and let your joy be sparked. Info
Arab Pop Art: Between East and West [Exhibition Opening] September 12-January 23 | Middle East Institute | FREE
Explore how artists from the Middle East have reimagined pop art by blending cultural traditions with Western visual styles. First emerging in the 1960s and later gaining new momentum through social media and digital technology in the 2000s, Arab pop art uses cheekiness, creativity, and street savvy flair to address regional social and political themes while challenging long-standing stereotypes. The result is an engaging perspective on how an American art movement evolved into something entirely new when expressed through a different cultural lens. Info
