Sam Gilliam Lecture Series: Coco Fusco [Artist Lecture] June 8, 6:30-9 PM | Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center | FREE
Coco Fusco, a Cuban American interdisciplinary artist, writer, and professor, discusses her work examining race, gender, and power through performance and video. The program begins with a screening of Fusco’s 25-minute video To Live in June with your Tongue Hanging Out, which explores the work of Cuban revolutionary Reinaldo Arenas. Following the screening, Fusco will join Dora Malech, Elliott Coleman Professor and chair of the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins, for a fireside chat about the connection between art, activism, and anthropology to challenge traditional power structures. Rachel A Sale’s photography series Icons reimagines iconic images through gender reversal with the intention of disruption rather than imitation. Rip! Tear! Collage as Critique Opening Reception [Gallery Opening] June 11, 6-8 PM | Eye Street Gallery | FREE
Twenty-three DC-based artists use collage to address division and fractured narratives throughout American history and in modern life. The collage methods include quilting, video, and photomontage. This show is presented by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. RSVP
A. Brockie Stevenson: An American Vision Opening Reception [Gallery Opening] June 13, 6-9 PM | American University Museum | FREE
A. Brockie Stevenson devoted his career to observing and recording America’s built environment with great precision. Small-town houses, fire stations, and storefronts become meditations on orderly solitude. Trained at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a longtime Corcoran teacher, Stevenson shaped generations of artists. His eleven paintings and eight silkscreens situate his work within the lineage of American Realism. More Info
Tenango Embroidery Workshop [Workshop] June 13, 11 AM-1 PM | Mexican Cultural Institute | $40
Learn this traditional textile art from authorized instructors of the Ñuju (Otomí) people. Participants will create a 20x20 cm embroidery piece using a provided kit. The two-hour class covers the history and cultural origins of Tenango embroidery from Hidalgo, Mexico, along with a step-by-step demonstration of the technique. Tickets
